2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Percy Julian finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Percy Julian finished ninth in Class 7A region two with a 1-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Percy Julian took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2016. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The Panthers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 8-3 record in 2021. Percy Julian was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.4 points a game. Percy Julian struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.2 points a game. Since 2010, Percy Julian has gone a combined 60-77. Their 43.8% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Percy Julian has managed to compile a record of 112-157. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 7A and 270th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach DreQuay Everett who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Percy Julian. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Everett. A new school name and mascot for the Panthers in 2023 but Coach Everett has his work cut out for him in rebuilding the once mighty football program. The Panthers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 66-45 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 7A and 20th in the AHSAA. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. Junior QB Bryson McGrew will be returning after completing 130 of 150 passes for 1,150 yards last season along with 9 touchdowns. The Panthers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Sidney Lanier on Saturday, August 26 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Sidney Lanier Poets finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fourth place in Class 6A region two. The Poets lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Theodore by a score of 35-20. Percy Julian and Sidney Lanier have met a total of 69 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 46-21-2 record against the Poets. They last met in 2022 with Sidney Lanier winning by a score of 20-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
