2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodland finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Woodland finished seventh in Class 2A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Woodland averaged scoring just 8.2 points a game. The Bobcats also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 39.2 points a game. Since 2010, Woodland has gone a combined 65-82. Their 44.2% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Woodland has managed to compile a record of 139-147. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 2A and 208th in the AHSAA. The Bobcats are led by head coach Joel Schrenk who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Woodland. The Bobcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Schrenk. Over the course of his career, Coach Schrenk's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won two region championships. The Bobcats have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 64-47 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 2A and 31st in the AHSAA. The Bobcats will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Woodland will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Bobcats open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Victory Christian on Friday, August 25 at Sewell Field. Last year the Victory Christian Lions finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 1A region six. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Coosa Christian by a score of 43-14. Woodland and Victory Christian have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Bobcats have a 5-2-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2022 with Victory Christian winning by a score of 31-6. Woodland lost 2A All-State defensive lineman Blu Herren to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Bobcats return 2A All-State Senior punter Callen Gay. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
