 2024 Preview

Etowah finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region six, the Blue Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Etowah's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to West Morgan by a score of 56-0.

Etowah took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2009. The Blue Devils lost as many games as in any season since 1984. The Blue Devils hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 8-4 record in 2022.

Etowah struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.3 points a game.

Since 2010, Etowah has gone a combined 111-53. Their 67.7% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Etowah has managed to compile a record of 185-98. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 4A and 60th in the AHSAA.

Coaching Change:
Matt Glover  leaves Etowah after just one complete season and coaching just two games into the 2023 season. Blake Bone took over for him after the first two games and finished the season out for the Blue Devils. His record at Etowah ended with at 8-6.

In 15 years as a head football coach his record stands at 84-74 with stops at Moody (2006-08), Pinson Valley (2009-2016) and St. Clair County (2017-18). His overall record is 84-74 during his career.

2024 Head Coach:
Scott Peavey  arrives at Etowah after spending the last seven seasons as the head football coach at Haralson County in Georgia. His teams finished a combined 40-34. Before moving to Georgia he was the head coach at Walter Wellborn (1999-2001), Haralson County GA (2002-2004) Ashville (2005) and Madison County (2009-2015).

In twenty-one seasons as a head football coach he has an overall record of 112-115. The win total includes 68 wins in Alabama and 44 victories from outside the state. Over the course of his career, Coach Peavey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship.

Season Outlook:

The Etowah Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region six during the 2024 season.

The Blue Devils saw a big drop off last year finishing with a record of 3-8 and making a midseason coaching change. It was their first losing season since 2009. One bright spot was that they did not break their streak of making the post season as they qualified for the playoffs once again. It is something they have done every year since 2009.

Coach Peavey said they have about 51 players out for summer workouts and 16 seniors on this year's team. Some players will be moved around to different positions in an attempt to get more production on both sides of the football. He also said the team has tremendous speed.

Don't think these Blue Devils will stay down long. Look for a quick bounce back and turnaround at Etowah this season.

The Blue Devils could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs every year since 2009 and hopes are high to extend that streak.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB Jameson Scissum had 1,847 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 925 rushing yards and 6 TDs last year and will be coming back in 2024.

Returning Starters:
QB Jameson Scissum

Season Opener:
The Blue Devils open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Jacksonville on Friday, August 23 at Jim Glover Field. Last year the Jacksonville Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in second place in Class 4A region four. The Golden Eagles lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Catholic Montgomery by a score of 44-20.

Etowah and Jacksonville have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 7-3-0 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 1999 with Etowah winning by a score of 41-13.
