Gordo completed the 2023 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Gordo captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Gordo reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Geraldine by a score of 42-34. The high-scoring Gordo offense ranked 9th in the AHSAA. They averaged 42.9 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Green Wave have Finished 21-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Gordo has gone a combined 148-31. Their 82.7% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Gordo has finished a combined 239-74. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 3A and 14th in the AHSAA. The Green Wave have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1992. Graduated All-State Players: Gordo lost 3A All-State offensive lineman Connor Tilley to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates athlete Ethan Wilder and linebacker Jace Hathcock. Head Coach: The Green Wave are led by head coach Gus Smith who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 21-4 over the past two seasons at Gordo. Under his direction the Green Wave have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Smith. Season Outlook: The Gordo Green Wave will play in Class 3A region five during the 2024 season. The Green Wave enter the 2024 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. The Green Wave open the 2024 season with a streak of 31 consecutive winning seasons on the line. That streak appears to be safe at least for the upcoming football season. In the last ten years they have won at least ten games in a season nine times. Now that is a winning tradition. Look for the past success to continue in Gordo as the Green Wave will put a quality product on the football field once again. Their first two games are against Fayette County and Bibb County before they settle into region play against Hanceville on September 6th. Coach Smith said about this year's team at Gordo. ''I believe we will have a great chance to make a deep playoff run this year. We are in a tough region with Winfield and Oakman along with others. We play a tough non region against Bibb County, Fayette, and a huge rivalry game against Reform. We look for big things from our QB Jase Neel and our RB CJ Lark. We return 4 or 5 offensive lineman.'' ''There will be some tough playoff opponents in 3A north again this year. Even tougher now that Fyffe has moved up. We are excited about our team this season. Last year we ran into a tough Geraldine team in the playoffs. But we are looking to rebound from that. Our defense has 8 returning starters, six of which have started for at least 2 years.'' While most teams rebuild during the off season, Gordo has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Green Wave are considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Green Wave have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.
