2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mae Jemison finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 2-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region eight, the Jaguars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Mae Jemison's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Parker by a score of 61-14. It marked the first time since the 2020 season that the Jaguars qualified for the playoffs. Mae Jemison struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.7 points a game. The Jaguars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-18 record. Mae Jemison is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only eight seasons. They have managed a record of 34-53 over the past eight years. Head Coach: The Jaguars are led by head coach Rico White who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-8 record in his first season at Mae Jemison. The Jaguars saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach White arrived. Under his direction the Jaguars have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach White. Over the course of his career, Coach White's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship. Season Outlook: The Mae Jemison Jaguars will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2024 season. The Jaguars finished last season with a 3-8 record but they won two games that mattered the most against Lee and Hazel Green and ended up in fourth place in the region and a spot in the 2023 playoffs before falling to Parker in the first round. The three wins were an improvement on the previous season when they finished 0-10. So can they improve on last year's showing? Time will tell under second year head football coach Rico White. The Jaguars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Season Opener: The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Athens on Friday, August 23 at Louis Crews Stadium. Last year the Athens Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 6A region seven. The Golden Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Oxford by a score of 45-27. Mae Jemison and Athens have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 0-3-0 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 2023 with Athens winning by a score of 55-27. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
