2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
South Choctaw Academy completed the 2023 season with a 5-6 record. With their 2-2 region record and a third place finish in Class A region two, the Rebels earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. South Choctaw Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Southern Academy by a score of 36-22. Since 2010, South Choctaw Academy has gone a combined 74-85. Their 46.5% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class AA over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, South Choctaw Academy has managed to compile a record of 144-137. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class AA and 16th in the AISA. Coaching Change: Joe Nettles leaves South Choctaw Academy after another one and done season on the sidelines. His 2023 team finished 5-6 losing in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Nettles has been a head football coach for 43 seasons at nineteen stops along the way. I believe that has to be some kind of record for most different places to have roamed the sidelines in Alabama. 2024 Head Coach: Stacy Luker is back in the coaching ranks after accepting the head coaching job at South Choctaw Academy in December. The Hall of Fame coach sat out last season after six seasons at Clarke County with a record of 44-29. He led the Bulldogs to a 2A state championship in 2021 with a 13-2 record. His 27 years on the sidelines have produced a record of 238-107 and six state titles. The 53-16 record is among the best winning percentages when playoffs are discussed in the state. His 238 wins rank 2nd among active coaches in the AISA. The win total includes 232 wins in Alabama and 6 victories from outside the state. Over the course of his career, Coach Luker's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-two times and won twelve region championships. He has a 53-16 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Luker won six state championships prior to arriving at South Choctaw Academy, the last coming in 2021 at Clarke County. Season Outlook: The South Choctaw Academy Rebels will play in Class AA region two during the 2024 season. The Rebels move up in classification to Class AA. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Rebels of South Choctaw Academy will be under new leadership when the season opens as Stacy Luker arrives in town. The Rebels will be young this season but should be able to compete for a playoff spot in the AISA. Coach Luker told AHSFHS.org ''We are a young team. Only 6 Seniors & Juniors. Good young group of players. Like a lot of small schools depth will be a problem. We have had a good off-season. We have focused on getting stronger & having a more physical mindset. '' The Rebels could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: Hayes Turner, Alex Cruz, Gage Adams, Jackson Boykin, Kade Carroll DEFENSE: Ben Knowles, Alex Cruz, Hayes Turner, Kade Carroll, Jackson Boykin, Kamden Fuller, Jack Johnson NEWCOMERS: Hagen Wallace, Dawson Sikes, Adam Mason Season Opener: The Rebels open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Bessemer Academy on Friday, August 23 at Jackson Memorial Stadium. Last year the Bessemer Academy Rebels finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fifth place in Class AAA region one. The Rebels lost in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs to Autauga Academy by a score of 29-20. South Choctaw Academy and Bessemer Academy have met a total of 2 times on the football field.
