2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Choctaw County completed the 2023 season with a 5-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region one, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Choctaw County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Maplesville by a score of 41-14. The Tigers improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2001. The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2003. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, the Choctaw County football program has struggled with a record of 29-106. Over the past 25 seasons, Choctaw County has not won much with a record of 68-179. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 1A and 361st in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Head Coach: The Tigers are led by head coach Leon Walker who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-4 record in his first season at Choctaw County. The Tigers saw improvement from a 4-6 record the season before coach Walker arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Walker. Over the course of his career, Coach Walker's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . Season Outlook: The Choctaw County Tigers will play in Class 1A region three during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 1A but move from region one over to region three. Five wins at many schools may not look very good but at Choctaw County last year it was a step in the right direction for the football program under Coach Leon Walker. It was the most wins for any team in Butler since 2003. Can the Tigers improve upon that record and get back to the playoffs again in 2024? Time will tell. The Tigers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region three this season. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: Devin Ruffin, Ja'Darrian Mosley, Roderick Crawford, Kentavis Blanks, Jarrod Chaney, Tyderious Ruffin DEFENSE: Devin Ruffin, Ja'Darrian Mosley, Roderick Crawford, Cedric Mosley, Jarrod Chaney, Tyderious Ruffin NEWCOMERS: Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Sumter Central on Friday, August 23 at Tiger Stadium. Choctaw County and Sumter Central have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 3-1-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2021 with Choctaw County winning by a score of 1-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
