 2024 Preview 


       Clements completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Clements just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region eight with a 2-4 region record.

       The Colts improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2019. The 348 points scored by the Colts last year were a team record in a single season. The Colts last playoff victory came during the 1988 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Since 2010, the Clements football program has struggled with a record of 38-105.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Clements has not won much with a record of 76-181. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 3A and 356th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Clements lost 3A All-State  athlete Jayden Gilbert to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Coaching Change:
     Michael Parker  leaves Clements after six seasons with a record of 24-39. He accepted a position at Sheffield under Johnny Wright in March as an assistant coach.

2024 Head Coach:
    Brick Pugh  studied at Belhaven University following graduation from East Limestone High School. He most recently was at Athens High School.

Season Outlook:

       The Clements Colts will play in Class 3A region seven during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Colts remain in 3A but move from region eight over to region seven.

      

       The Colts will open the 2024 football season without the services of running back Jayden Gilbert who graduated in the spring along with the 1,691 yards and 23 touchdowns he scored last season.

       Clements won five games last year for only the second time since 2009 so there was some improvement. First year head coach Brick Pugh will be coming in this season in hopes of building off the success of last year.

       The Colts will return just two starters from last season on offense but will welcome back six to the defense. They will be counting on young players such as Kingston Croft, Torre Pride and Alex Moreno to fill in the gaps when the season opens in August against Ardmore.

       First year head coach Brick Pugh simply stated the Colts need to ''Play to our standard.''

    The Colts have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region seven this season. Clements missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season this year.

Season Opener:
       The Colts open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent West Limestone on Friday, August 23 at James Kennemer Stadium. Last year the West Limestone Wildcats finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 4A region seven.

       Clements and West Limestone have met a total of 59 times on the football field. The Colts have a 23-36-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2023 with West Limestone winning by a score of 29-26.

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
