2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hillcrest finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Hillcrest just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region one with a 3-4 region record. The Jaguars lost as many games as in any season since 2016. Since 2010, Hillcrest has gone a combined 87-76. Their 53.4% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Hillcrest has managed to compile a record of 133-145. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 3A and 209th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Jaguars are led by head coach Justin Nared who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Hillcrest. The Jaguars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Nared. Season Outlook: The Hillcrest Jaguars will play in Class 3A region one during the 2024 season. The Jaguars broke a streak of nine straight playoff seasons by not getting there the past two years finishing fifth both times. Region one will be very competitive with the likes of Excel, T.R. Miller, Bayside and Flomaton all trying to win that coveted region crown. Hillcrest will return nine players on offense and another eight to the defense in 2024 so they will be a veteran team in 2024 with hopes of a much better season than the three wins from a year ago. Coach Nared stated about the 2024 Jaguars ''We boast a roster that returns 17 starters. 9 on offense and 8 on defense. The entire offensive line returns. Converted WR to QB Kevin Porter Jr. returns for his second year at QB. Juniors Ahmirion Thomas and Zack Cobb will anchor a veteran offensive line.'' He also said ''Defensively, Seniors Jamir Sharpe, Dorian Watson Watson, and Patrick McDonald will anchor the defense. Rising Juniors Jayden Lowery and JT Barlow will help round out a defense that is returning 8 starters.'' The Jaguars have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region one this season. Hillcrest missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season this year. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: QB Kevin Porter Jr., OL Ahmirion Thomas, OL Zack Cobb, Seniors DEFENSE: Jamir Sharpe, Dorian Watson, Patrick McDonald, Jayden Lowery, JT Barlow Season Opener: The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent B.C. Rain on Friday, August 23 at Brooks Memorial Stadium. Last year the B.C. Rain Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 5A region one. The Red Raiders lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Demopolis by a score of 13-6. Hillcrest and B.C. Rain have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 2-2-0 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in 2009 with B.C. Rain winning by a score of 30-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
