 2024 Preview

Madison Academy completed the 2023 season with a 14-1 record. The Mustangs cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Madison Academy captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Mustangs won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 3A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Mobile Christian at the Alabama Super Seven 55-28 in Birmingham.

The Mustangs won as many games as in any season since 2014. The Mustangs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Godsey saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 9-3 record in 2022.

The high-scoring Madison Academy offense ranked 5th in the AHSAA. They averaged 47.9 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Mustangs have Finished 23-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Madison Academy has gone a combined 153-34. Their 81.8% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Madison Academy has finished a combined 216-90. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 4A and 43rd in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Madison Academy lost 3A All-State  running back Ken Cherry to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates receiver Jackson Reece and offensive lineman Reese Baker.

Head Coach:
The Mustangs are led by head coach Bob Godsey who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 50-13 over the past five seasons at Madison Academy. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Godsey. His 233 wins rank 13th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Godsey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-two times and won ten region championships. He has a 32-21 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Godsey won a state championship at Hartselle in 2011.

Season Outlook:

The Madison Academy Mustangs will play in Class 4A region eight during the 2024 season. The Mustangs move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

The Mustangs enter the 2024 season riding a 18 game regular season winning streak. Madison Academy has won 10 consecutive region games. They have won 8 straight games on their home turf at Bill Washington Stadium.

The Mustangs lost a lot of talent at the skilled positions when they walked on graduation day back in May. Their leading passer, rusher and receiver all will be missed this season.

Top priority this fall will be to find a replacement for graduated starting quarterback Jake Poldiak and the 2,157 yards he threw for last season. They will also be without Ken Cherry and his 2,546 yards rushing when the season opens. They also lost Jackson Reece at receiver. Place kicker Neil Radak returns after missing last season with injury.

Their 18 game regular season winning streak could be in serious jeopardy with games against the likes of Mars Hill to open the season and with Randolph and Arab later.

Coach Godsey said ''Madison Academy returns a solid nucleus of leaders from last year's Super 7 run. Success this season will depend on how quickly the Newcomers to Watch can play to form. This will be the youngest Mustangs roster in Coach Godsey's 6 seasons. Expectations are always high at Madison Academy and this year is no different as they look to be in the hunt come playoff time.''

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Madison Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season.     The Mustangs are considered one of the favorites for the region eight championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Mustangs are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Mustangs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2008 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

Players to Watch in 2024:
RB Joshua Williams will return after rushing for 1,624 yards and 23 TDs in 2023.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: RB Josh Williams, WR Jaiden Etienne, Ajay Seaton, AJ Rice
DEFENSE: LB AJ Rice, Keaton Watson, LB Josh Williams, Michaell Wiggins, Maurice Scott
NEWCOMERS: Zyan Williams, Jack Doyle, WR Daniel McCauley, Alex Crider, Cam Williams

Season Opener:
The Mustangs open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Mars Hill on Friday, August 23 at Bill Washington Stadium. Last year the Mars Hill Panthers finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 3A region eight. The Panthers lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Madison Academy by a score of 21-14.

Madison Academy and Mars Hill have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 1-1-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2023 with Madison Academy winning by a score of 21-14.
