Monroe Academy finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-9 record. With their 2-5 region record and a sixth place finish in Class AAA region one, the Volunteers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Monroe Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Fort Dale Academy by a score of 49-7. The Volunteers lost as many games as in any season since 2006. The defense allowed a team record 397 points last season. It marked the first time since the 2020 season that the Volunteers qualified for the playoffs. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Monroe Academy has gone a combined 132-42. Their 75.9% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class AAA over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Monroe Academy has finished a combined 216-82. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class AAA and 2nd in the AISA. Head Coach: The Volunteers are led by head coach Mitchell Turberville who is entering his nineteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 161-57 over the past eighteen seasons at Monroe Academy. Under his direction the Volunteers have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times. They have won eleven region crowns with Coach Turberville. Coach Turberville has won four state championships at Monroe Academy, the last coming in 2018. His 161 wins rank 6th among active coaches in the AISA. Season Outlook: The Monroe Academy Volunteers will play in Class AAA region two during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Volunteers remain in AAA but move from region one over to region two. The Volunteers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region two this season. Season Opener: The Volunteers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Sparta Academy on Friday, August 30 at Volunteer Stadium. Last year the Sparta Academy Warriors finished with an overall record of 1-10 and in fourth place in Class A region two. The Warriors lost in the first round of the Class A playoffs to Lowndes Academy by a score of 47-0. Monroe Academy and Sparta Academy have met a total of 25 times on the football field.
