2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Saks finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Saks finished seventh in Class 3A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Saks took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2019. The Wildcats lost as many games as in any season since 2005. The defense allowed a team record 424 points last season. The Wildcats hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 7-4 record in 2022. Saks was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.8 points a game. Saks struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.4 points a game. Since 2010, Saks has gone a combined 112-50. Their 69.1% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Saks has managed to compile a record of 157-121. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 3A and 134th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Wildcats are led by head coach Alphonso Freeney who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Saks. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Freeney. Season Outlook: The Saks Wildcats will play in Class 3A region six during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Wildcats remain in 3A but move from region four over to region six. The Saks Wildcats would like to just forget about the 2023 football season and that 1-9 record. They return a group of players with another year of experience so the prospects are good that they will return to their old form of being competitive. Quarterback Jamorris Young is back to lead the offense in 2024. This season, the Wildcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. Players to Watch in 2024: LB Shannon Noel had 68 tackles on defense and will be back for his junior season. Returning Starters: ALL-COUNTY: Ja'Quay Judkins, OL, Jr.; Tyler Rucker, LS, Sr.; Lajuan Curry, WR, Sr.; Shannon Noel, LB, Jr.; Tyeshawn Toney, DB, Sr.; Gage Brown, TE/LB, Sr.; Joseph Buggs, DL/OL, Sr.; Nick Mixson, RB/DB, Jr.; Juelz McClellan, KR/PR, So.; Delandas Allen, DL, Jr.; Mason Stevens, OL/DL, Sr.; Justin Cosper, DL, Sr. Season Opener: The Wildcats open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Horseshoe Bend on Friday, August 23 at Battle Stadium. Last year the Horseshoe Bend Generals finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 2A region three. The Generals ended last season on a positive note with a win over Beulah by a score of 19-10 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Saks and Horseshoe Bend on the football field. The Wildcats have a 0-1-0 record against the Generals.
