Alabama All-Star Game
1950
The 1950 All-Star game was the first after the new division of the state and each squad had five coaches due to the fact that the Fifth District was divided. The Northern team was directed by Larry "Buck" Hughes, Huntsville, as head coach. His assistants were Estes Hudson, Winfield; Allen McNeese, Lineville; Jim Glover, Etowah; and Russell Inman, Fairfield. The South was guided by Mal Morgan, Lanett, as head coach. His assistants were Ward Proctor, West End; John Simpkins, Jackson; Bill Moseley, Lanier; and Jim Reynolds, Elba.
The Southern team won its first victory in the series 12-7. Charles Littles was the outstanding backfield star of the game, gaining 81 yards in 17 rushes. Roy Freeman was the outstanding lineman. Freeman hailed from Decatur, and Littles from Andalusia. Buddy Cranford from Tuscaloosa and Claude Sala of West End also were very potent ball carriers. From the game, 15 of the stars entered Auburn and 25 went to Alabama, a large percentage of them played varsity for the first year.
