Week Ten Tidbits & Records

The playoffs begin in one weeks. Who is in and who is left out? Here are a few tidbits from the tenth week of football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.

   *   Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.

   *   The AHSFHS Power Ratings got 178 of 196 games correct this week when picking the winners.  That is 91% of the games in the correct column.

   *   Follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.  You can also try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.

   *   The regular season winds down but we still had a few great games this past week.  Most of the playoff slots are filled with only a few remaining for those select few teams lucky enough to get a late season victory.  Here are some of the best matchups this week.

   *  #2 Pleasant Grove knocked off #7 Bibb  County 35-14 to lock up a region championship.

   *  The #5 Fyffe Red Devils took out a little revenge on #8 Geraldine by the score of 42-7 in a huge region game.

   *  #3 Coosa Christian defeated #7 Tuscaloosa Academy 35-21 in a non-region contest.

   *  Also in 2A, #6 Winston County got past Decatur Heritage 14-7 in a defensive struggle.

   *  Alma Bryant broke a 16 game losing streak in defeating Foley 14-10.

   *  Muscle Shoals squeaked past Hartselle 29-28 for their second straight region crown.

   *  Corner put up a game ending goal line stand to defeat Carver Birmingham 31-30.

   *  There were several major upsets this week.  The biggest was Greene County beating Vincent 32-24 after entering the game as a 24 point underdog. Buckhorn shocked Cullman 14-7 as a 20 point underdog. Lastly McGill-Toolen knocked off Spanish Fort 2-10 after being an 18 point dog.

   *   If you appreciate offense you will love this. Last week fifty-one teams scored at least 50 points.  This week we topped that with 58 teams turning the trick  They were led by Russell County dumping Rehobeth 77-40 and Sylvania getting the best of Brindlee Mountain 76-0.  That is a lot of offense!

   *   Overall Alabama schools have a record of 25-19 against other states following four weeks of action.  They are 5-8 against Georgia, 15-8 versus Florida and 4-0 versus Tennessee.  They are also 1-2 against an opponent from Mississippi and 0-1 against Texas after Permian beat Bessemer City recently.  We are only counting the AHSAA schools.

   *  Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 174 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season.  The Red Devils are the #5 team in 3A following their latest victory.

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 24 straight victories.  The Knights have gotten accustomed to being in 5A very quickly and knocked off Andalusia 38-0 this week.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA has a 27 game streak going.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 90 straight contests.  They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.  They lost to Jasper 48-0.

   *   Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 40 consecutive region wins.  The Knights wrapped up another perfect regular season by finishing 9-0.

   *   Barbour County has lost 71 consecutive region games following a 42-6 loss to Zion Chapel.

   *  The #1 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 43 straight regular season games.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 30 consecutive home wins.  The Spartans beat Theodore 42-0 this week on the road.  If they play another road contest it will be at least the second round of the playoffs.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 27 consecutive road games. The Knights next road trip will be later in the playoffs.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils extended their streak of consecutive games scoring once again this past week.  They are currently sitting on a string of 330 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   The Sweet Water Bulldogs won the 600th game in their program's history.  They are 600-368-25 since first fielding a team back in 1930.
