Round Two of the 2024 Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The playoffs are here. On to the quarterfinals for everyone except 7A who will be playing semi-final games this week. Here are a few tidbits from the second round.

   *   We will have all the usual things posted throughout the weekend and next week.  Be sure to catch the podcast and the previews of every upcoming playoff game.

   *   Undefeated teams are getting fewer as the weeks progress. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - None
       6A - Oxford (12-0), Saraland (11-0), Spain Park (12-0)
       5A - Catholic Montgomery (11-0), Central Clay County (12-0)
       4A - West Morgan (12-0)
       3A - Piedmont (12-0), T.R. Miller (12-0)
       2A - Cottonwood (12-0), Highland Home (12-0), Winston County (12-0)
       1A - Wadley (10-0)
AISA - Lowndes Academy (11-0), South Choctaw Academy (12-0)

   *   We had some great games played Friday night and will have a bunch of great matchups this week.  Here are some notes from last week.

   *  There were several major upsets this week.  The biggest was St. Michael defeating Pleasant Grove after entering the game as a 15 point underdog.  Corner upset Boaz 52-42 after being a pregame 12 point underdog.

   *   In Class 6A all eight No. One seeds advance just as they did last year.  It is the fifteenth time that all of the top seeds have advanced in any classification. Only three other times since 2000 have all eight top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals in 2009 1A, 2019 1A and 2020 2A.

   *   Only two No. 4 seeds advance to the quarterfinals. UMS-Wright following a 7-6 win over Andalusia and Sulligent after their big win over Southeastern.  Last year no #4 seeds advanced past the second round.

   *   Maplesville has a record of 19-9 in the third round of the playoffs for the most wins in any class.

   *   Teams reaching the quarterfinals who have never played in the third round previously include:  Corner, Southside Selma and St. Michael.

   *   Including those two schools, teams who have never won a third round game:  Ariton, Fairfield, Fort Payne, Moody and West Morgan.

   *   Teams who have never hosted a third round game but will this week include; Pike Road, Southside Selma, Tuscaloosa Academy and Millry.

   *   Teams with great home records in the quarterfinals who will be hosting a playoff game this week: Saraland (5-0), Oxford (5-1) and T.R. Miller (12-3).

   *   The best quarterfinal matchups I would most like to see; Spain Park (12-0) at Saraland (12-0), Central Clay County (12-0) at Catholic Montgomery (11-0), Cottonwood (12-0) at Reeltown (11-1) and Fyffe (9-2) at Piedmont (12-0).

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 26 straight victories.  The Knights took care of Citronelle 43-0 for their sixth shutout of the season.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA has a 30 game streak going after defeating Patrician Academy 35-18 to advance to the championship game this week.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 91 straight contests.  They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 32 consecutive home wins.  The Spartans defeated McAdory 49-14 last week.  They will host undefeated Spain Park this week.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 28 consecutive road games following their road win over Citronelle. The Knights will be back at home this week as they entertain Central Clay County.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils extended their streak of consecutive games scoring once again this past week.  They are currently sitting on a string of 332 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Brad Abbott, the head football coach at Maplesville won the 100th game of his coaching career.  His overall record at Jemison and Maplesville stands at 100-52 in 13 seasons.
