Week Three Tidbits & Records

Region play got underway this week for most teams. Here are a few tidbits from the third week of football action.

   *  If you missed any of the action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything. Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.

   *   Our series on "people you should know" continues this week with a new personality on Monday. Look for that too.

   *   Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.

   *   Something new we are going to try is a Facebook group. You can find a link on the homepage in the right column.  It's easy to join and all we discuss is football.

   *   Follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.  Last week the guys were 8-4 in their predictions.  You can also try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.

   *  As we begin to settle into region play teams will separate themselves from the pack with big wins as they strive to grab one of the four playoff spots in each region.  While none of the teams can claim anything yet it will become clearer who the top teams are over the next few weeks.

   *  We will start with a few Thursday night games where Central Phenix City had no mercy on Smiths Station by a score of 69-15.  In other interesting games Excel outlasted Flomaton 28-22 and Lanett shutout Loachapoka 13-0.  Most other games were lopsided to say the least.

   *  The game of the week had to be the matchup between Elba and McKenzie down in 1A.  McKenzie won the highest scoring game in history 80-78 in four overtimes.  Alvin Henderson ran for 435 yards and scored an amazing ten touchdowns and three 2-pt. conversions to set another record by scoring 66 points in a single game.

   *  Most of the top ten teams took care of business as only seven lost this past week.  In a few games between ranked teams Enterprise took care of Dothan 28-21, Hoover handled Hillcrest 35-6, Saraland got past Gulf Shores in the rain and mud 31-7 and Georgiana thumped Florala 40-8.

   *  McGill-Toolen senior Jack O'Neil had never played high school football prior to this season but kicked six field goals in 18-16 win over Theodore.  He now has eleven field goals in his first three games.

   *  There were some great finishes too.  James Clemens blocked a field goal as time expired to defeat Bob Jones 34-31.  Hewitt-Trussville scored with just 20 seconds remaining to outlast Vestavia Hills 18-14.

   *  The biggest upset was likely University Charter School upsetting Red Bay 16-14.  The Trail Blazers were 22 point underdogs. In other surprises Sand Rock shutout North Sand Mountain 16-0 and Ashford upset Dale County 14-6. All were huge underdogs entering the game.

   *   Most teams went out and proved they were deserving of being ranked among the best in the state currently.

   *   Overall Alabama schools have a record of 14-9 against other states following two weeks of action. They are 4-6 against Georgia, 7-3 versus Florida and 2-0 versus Tennessee. They have won the only game against an opponent from Mississippi.  We are only counting the AHSAA schools.

   *  Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 167 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Devils are the #4 team in 3A following a 42-10 win over Collinsville.

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 18 straight victories.  The Knights shutout Eufaula 28-0 on Saturday.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA has a 20 game streak going.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 84 straight contests. They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.  They lost to Muscle Shoals 63-6.

   *   Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 34 consecutive region wins. The Knights continue region play next week against Charles Henderson.  Russellville is not too far behind with 25 staright region wins.

   *   Barbour County has lost 66 consecutive region games after losing to Highland Home by a score of 54-0.

   *  The #2 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 37 straight regular season games.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 26 consecutive home wins. The Spartans took care of Gulf Shores Friday night on the road and will host Spanish Fort this coming Friday night.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 25 consecutive road games. The Knights next road trip will be to Saraland on September 27th..

   *   Fyffe got back on the winning track last week as the Red Devils extended their streak of consecutive games scoring.  They are currently sitting on a string of 323 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Guntersville won the 650th game in the school's history Friday with a 52-22 win over Brewer.  The Wildcats have an overall record of 650-414-21 since first getting onto the football field back in 1914.

   *   The Minor Tigers won the 500th game in school history with a 48-27 win over Woodlawn to move to 3-0 on the season.

   *   David Smothers, the head football coach at Addison, won the 100th game in his thirteen year career with the Bulldogs in a 51-0 shutout of Shoals Christian. His record now stands at 100-42.
