Week Four Tidbits & Records

Region play got underway this week for most teams. Here are a few tidbits from the fourth week of football action.

   *  What a week of high school football. We had a little bit of everything. Rain, Mud, cancelled games, postponed games, 11am games, 8:45 kickoffs, forfeits, Saturday games and actually some great games were played Friday night.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.

   *   Our series on "people you should know" continues this week with a new personality on Monday. Look for that too.

   *   Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.

   *   The AHSFHS Power Ratings got 163 of 193 games correct this week when picking the winners.  That is 85% of the games in the correct column.

   *   Follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.  Last week the guys were 10-2 in their predictions.  You can also try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.  A couple of fans did just that this past week.

   *  We will start with a few Thursday night games where Jackson held off 7A Baker in a great game 20-13.  Parker dismantled Mortimer Jordan 46-0 and St. Paul's took care of Murphy 41-0.

   *  How about Glenwood and Lee-Scott?  Both schools moved over from the AISA this summer and are currently 4-0 on the season.

   *  The ASWA top ten teams continued their winning ways in most cases.  There were some close matchups.  Central Phenix City had trouble putting Dothan  away but held on for a 42-35 victory.  Enterprise fell to Auburn 53-22, Hoover came from behind late to defeat Hewitt-Trussville 8-7, Saraland held off Spanish Fort 42-17 and Corner surprised Ramsay by a score of 22-8.  Sylvania defeated Geraldine 17-7 in a battle of 3A titans.  Lastly Leroy got the better of Sweet Water 27-20 in a 1A matchup.

   *  The Vestavia Hills Rebels play as difficult a schedule as any team in the state and started the season 0-3 losing to Carver, Auburn and Hewitt-Trussville.  All they did in week four is go down to Tuscaloosa and defeat a very good Hillcrest squad 49-17.  What a way to bounce back.

   *  There were some dramatic finishes too.  Spain Park held Helena on a 2-point conversion attempt late to win that huge game 28-26.  Andalusia was down 24-0 in the first quarter to Greenville before rallying for a 26-24 victory.  Connor Hughes booted 2 field goals; one from 57 yards and the other from 56 yards to secure a 14-13 victory for Fort Payne over Southside Gadsden.

   *  A few teams have surprised everyone with their early season success.  All these schools have started the 2024 football season 4-0.  Bessemer City, Prattville, Central Florence, Colbert Heights, Hale County, Shelby County, Williamson and Winston County.  Southern Choctaw, Verbena and Vina are 3-0.  Great starts for these programs who have not found that kind of success recently.

   *  The biggest upset was likely Wicksburg beating Montgomery Academy 27-22.  The Panthers entered the game as 15 point underdogs.

   *  Vina is 3-0 for first time since 1982. They got a big 32-8 victory over Shoals Christian.

   *   Most ranked teams simply went about their business in search of a region championship and home field advantage in the playoffs.

   *   Overall Alabama schools have a record of 18-9 against other states following four weeks of action. They are 5-6 against Georgia, 9-3 versus Florida and 3-0 versus Tennessee. They have won the only game against an opponent from Mississippi.  We are only counting the AHSAA schools.

   *  Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 168 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Devils are the #4 team in 3A following a 63-0 win over Asbury.

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 19 straight victories.  The Knights took care of Catholic of Pensacola FL 28-14.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA has a 21 game streak going.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 85 straight contests. They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.  They lost to Hartselle 65-0.

   *   Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 34 consecutive region wins. The Knights continue region play this week against Charles Henderson.  Russellville is not too far behind with 26 straight region wins.

   *   Barbour County has lost 66 consecutive region games after losing to Highland Home by a score of 54-0.

   *  The #2 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 38 straight regular season games.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 27 consecutive home wins. The Spartans took care of Spanish Fort 42-17 on their home turf.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 25 consecutive road games. The Knights next road trip will be to Saraland on September 27th.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils extended their streak of consecutive games scoring.  They are currently sitting on a string of 324 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   The Jackson Aggies not only knocked off 7A Baker they also joined the 650 win club along the way.  The Aggies became the 19th school to achieve that mark.  They first fielded a team back in 1916 and have an overall record of 650-374-41 since.
