A week off from the region races for most teams
before the final playoff push. Here are a few tidbits
from the sixth week of football action.
* A few games got cancelled this week. Moody vs. Auburn, Central Phenix City
vs. IMG Academy, Glenwood School vs. Wadley and Catholic vs. Saraland. All
would have been great games to watch but sadly not this year.
* Be sure to catch our podcast
this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering
all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.
* Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and
every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our
very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.
* The AHSFHS Power Ratings got 125 of 161 games correct this
week when picking the winners. That is 78% of the games in the correct
column.
* Follow the Barber
Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. You can also
try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.
* A few changes coming on Wednesday in the ASWA
top ten as a few ranked teams lost this past week.
*
Even with the cancellations there were still some great matchups this week.
Parker scored with a late drive to defeat 7A Hoover 14-10 and Clay-Chalkville
defeated Thompson in overtime 14-13.
* Clay-Chalkville's defense held Thompson scoreless for 3 quarters
while rushing the ball 54 times for 241 yards. The Thundering Herd held
the Bucs to only 88 yards of offense on the night proving they are one of the
best defenses in the state.
*
Coosa Christian shut down the high powered offense of Fyffe to come away with a
29-2 victory. Fyffe, the two-time defending 2A state champion, suffered
its largest margin of defeat since losing 35-7 to Lineville in the second round
of the 2003 2A playoffs.
* Central Clay County got a big win over Scottsboro 35-21. The Volunteers rolled up 380 yards of total offense
led by QB DeShaun Gibbons with 168 yards and 3 touchdowns.
* The Jaguars of Spain Park knocked off James
Clemens 34-24 after falling behind early 14-0. It's their first 5-0 start to a
season since 2013.
* Austin held Florence to two first downs in a 20-0 win over the Falcons in
a game postponed from a couple of weeks ago.
* Alma Bryant pulled off the craziest finish of the season as the Hurricanes
blocked a field goal with six seconds remaining in the game returning it for the
game winning touchdown. Go Canes!
* Alvin Henderson rushed for four touchdowns and
had 346 yards on 25 carries in Elba's 48-34 win over Goshen.
* A few teams have surprised everyone with their early season success.
All these schools have started the 2024 football season 5-0. Berry
Fayette, Central
Florence, Hale County,
St. Michael, Verbena, Williamson and Winston County. These teams are
hoping the success continues into the post season.
* The biggest upset was likely
J.A.G getting past Center Point 24-16 in overtime after entering the game as a
17 point underdog. St. Clair County defeated Shelby County 28-21 after being a pregame
16 point underdog according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings.
*

having won 25 consecutive road games. The Knights next road trip will be to
Greenville on October 18th.

consecutive games scoring by the narrowest of margins scoring just two points
against Coosa Christian. They are currently sitting on a string of 326 games
without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354
games.
