Week Eight Tidbits & Records

The playoffs begin in just three more weeks. Who is in and who is left out? Here are a few tidbits from the eighth week of football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.

   *   Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.

   *   The AHSFHS Power Ratings got 165 of 196 games correct this week when picking the winners.  That is 84% of the games in the correct column.

   *   Follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.  You can also try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.

   *   Once again there were a few great games among the ranked teams this week.

   *  #2 Central Phenix City got past #7 Carver Montgomery 31-26 in a great game.  The Red Devils scored on a long pass shortly after Carver had taken a late lead.

   *  The #4 Spain Park Jaguars dominated Chelsea 31-3 on Thursday night in a huge region game.

   *  #2 Guntersville defeated #9 Scottsboro 34-7 in Class 5A and #6 Moody beat Leeds for the first time in fifteen years 38-22.

   *  In 4A, Bibb County rolled past Oak Grove 40-14 in another big region matchup.

   *  In close games Jasper stopped Muscle Shoals 2-point conversion attempt to hang on for a 49-48 victory.  Hartselle quarterback Noah Lee scored on a 4-yard TD run with 49 seconds as the Tigers defeated Athens 21-19.

   *  A few teams have surprised everyone with their early season success.   Williamson and Winston County continued to rack up the wins as both schools have started the 2024 football season 6-0.

   *  There were several major upsets this week.  The biggest was Central Coosa surprising Lanett 28-21 after entering the game as a 32 point underdog.  Shoals Christian knocked off Cherokee 13-6 after being a pregame 31 point underdog according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings.

   *  No less than forty-eight teams scored more than 50 points this week.  That is a lot of offense!

   *   Overall Alabama schools have a record of 24-19 against other states following four weeks of action.  They are 5-8 against Georgia, 14-8 versus Florida and 4-0 versus Tennessee.  They are also 1-2 against an opponent from Mississippi and 0-1 against Texas after Permian beat Bessemer City recently.  We are only counting the AHSAA schools.
