Week Nine Tidbits & Records

The playoffs begin in just two more weeks. Who is in and who is left out? Here are a few tidbits from the ninth week of football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday as we will be posting a new episode covering all the action with Kurt, TP and myself.

   *   Scoring averages will be posted for each classification and every team on Sunday along with the AHSFHS Power Ratings for all teams and our very own Power Ratings Top Ten for each classification on Monday.

   *   The AHSFHS Power Ratings got 163 of 191 games correct this week when picking the winners.  That is 85% of the games in the correct column.

   *   Follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.  You can also try your luck at beating them in the forums on Wednesday.

   *   As always there were some great matchup between ranked teams this past week.

   *  #1 Auburn got past #9 Carver Montgomery 29-14 to lock up a region championship.

   *  The #2 Central Phenix City Red Devils fell to # 8 Opelika 23-14 in a huge region game.

   *  #4 Mary Montgomery came from a 28-14 deficit to overtake #10 Baker and win the Region One title.

   *  In 6A, #2 Clay-Chalkville dropped a game to #5 Oxford 21-10 and #3 Parker took care of #6 Homewood 27-17.  Both game wrapped up region titles for the winners.

   *  Close games and dramatic finishes? Austin 31-28 James Clemens. The Black Bears held off a James Clemens rally and used a field goal with seconds left to win the huge region game.

   *  Theodore's Crishon Overton completed a 35-yard Hail Mary for a touchdown as time expired Friday night to give the Bobcats' a stunning 16-14 road win over Gulf Shores.

   *  Scottsboro quarterback Jake Jones ran for a 7-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the game as the Wildcats rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final six minutes to win 50-47.

   *  Boaz QB Tyler Pierce ran for an 11-yard touchdown with 15 seconds remaining in the game to give the Pirates a 42-35 win over No. 2 Guntersville.

   *  There were several major upsets this week.  The biggest was Boaz defeating Guntersville after entering the game as a 19 point underdog according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings.  Fairfield was also a 19 point underdog but knocked off Bibb County 30-28.

   *   If you appreciate offense you will love this stat. No less than fifty-one teams scored at least 50 points this week.  They were led by Winston County who outscored Tharptown 72-20 and Alabama Christian who thumped Slocomb by a score of 71-38.  That is a lot of offense!

   *   Overall Alabama schools have a record of 25-19 against other states following four weeks of action.  They are 5-8 against Georgia, 15-8 versus Florida and 4-0 versus Tennessee.  They are also 1-2 against an opponent from Mississippi and 0-1 against Texas after Permian beat Bessemer City recently.  We are only counting the AHSAA schools.

   *  Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 173 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season.  The Red Devils are the #5 team in 3A following their 61-19 victory over Holly Pond.

   *   The current longest winning streak among the AHSAA schools now belongs to Catholic Montgomery with a string of 23 straight victories.  The Knights have gotten accustomed to being in 5A very quickly and knocked off Greenville 50-14 this week.  Lowndes Academy in the AISA has a 26 game streak going.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 89 straight contests.  They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.  They lost to Athens 54-0.

   *   Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 39 consecutive region wins.  The Knights finish up region play next week against Andalusia in a huge game on the road.

   *  The #1 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 42 straight regular season games.

   *   The Saraland Spartans, ranked #1 in 6A, are rolling along with 30 consecutive home wins.  The Spartans beat Murphy 58-7 this week at home.  They will travel to Theodore to wrap up the regular season on the road.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 26 consecutive road games. The Knights next road trip will be to Andalusia this coming week.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils extended their streak of consecutive games scoring once again this past week.  They are currently sitting on a string of 329 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.
