Series:

Brooks holds a 29-21 edge in the games played.
|
|
Comments: Brooks comes in at 2-2. They're coming off a 61-14 drubbing of Wilson. A game that saw QB Garrett Burrough rush for 3 TD while passing for 146 yards. Slade Vandervelde caught 127 of those yards. |
Lauderdale County comes in 3-2 and reeling from a revenge loss to Mars Hill 31-14, a game that was closer than the score would indicate. Lauderdale County was held to just 197 total yards against Mars Hill, but only gave up 244 to an offensive machine. |
Brooks offense has been inconsistent at best this year. Lauderdale County had some untimely turnovers last week and will probably be without Tucker this week. Lauderdale County is not a team Brooks can afford to not being in an offensive rhythm against. This game could likely come down to who makes a big play or gets a turnover or even special teams. I like Brooks kicker, but I don't like the inconsistency on offense. |

Spain Park holds a 2-1 edge in the games played.
|
|
Comments: Spain Park comes in 4-0 and have already knocked off two 7A opponents this year, including the ever dangerous Hoover Bucs. Brock Bradley is coming off a 9 for 17 performance that saw him throw 2 TDS and 1 INT against Benjamin Russell. BRHS didn't have anyone on the field that could cover WR Corey Barber. |
The Jets of James Clemens also enter this game undefeated at 4-0, coming off a region win 38-18 against Grissom. A game in which they relied heavily on miscues from Grissom and the legs of Cameron Berry. Berry had TD runs of 45 and 52 yards. |
James Clemens hasn't played a team the caliber of Spain Park this year. The Jets are going to have to get more going through the air to stay close. Ultimately I don't think the Jets will have an answer for SPHS passing game. |

Series:

Hamilton holds a 63-23 edge in the games played.
|
|
Comments: Sulligent enters the game 2-3, on a 2 game losing streak. The last two games, they've only been able to muster 12 total points. Sulligent threw two picks against Vincent. Braden Long was a bright spot though, putting pressure on the Vincent QB all night and coming up with a couple of sacks. |
Hamilton comes in 3-1. only losing in a nail biter by 4 to Dora. Mason Holloway accounted for 4 TD's (2 through air and 2 on the ground) in last weeks destruction of Curry. Their season scoring average ranks second in 4A at 47.8 ppg. |
Sulligent has had problems getting the offense going as of late and that isn't a good sign when a larger school with a prolific offense awaits you. It will take a Herculean effort for the Blue Devils to pull this one off. I think Mason Holloway continues to have a big year and leads Hamilton to a big victory. |

|
|
Comments: Westbrook Christian comes in 2-2 and on a 2 game losing streak. Of course those losses were to Locust Fork and Piedmont, nothing to be ashamed of. Steve Smith has the warriors playing good ball in his first year at Westbrook. Both Wood and Jones are good running backs and Blevins is a pretty solid QB who is deceptively elusive. |
Munford comes in 1-3 and on a 3 game losing streak. Munford does have a defense that can put pressure on the QB, lead by #10, who I believe is Jacob Borden. |
The matchup here is Westbrooks QB against the Munford QB pressure. Stepping up a classification is always tough, but Steve Smith knows how to prepare a team as good as anyone. I think Munford will be able to utilize QB pressure to rattle Westbrook. |

Coosa Christian holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.
|
|
Comments: If you like hard-hitting football between two lower-classification schools then this matchup is as good as it gets. Coosa Christian, the defending 1A runner-up, takes on two-time reigning 2A state champions Fyffe, although both now play in one class higher than a season ago. |
Forget beating Coosa Christian. It's hard enough to even score on this defense, led by 1st-team All-State players in DL Cade Mickler, LB Clete O'Bryant, and DB Grayson Malone. They allowed just 6.5 ppg in 2023, and they're giving up 11 ppg this season. However, that number is inflated due to giving up 41 to defending state champions Pierce County from Georgia. Against in-state competition, they've allowed 14 points through four games. The offense will be led by QB John-David Justus and RB duo Kanon Wilson and Joseph East. |
Everyone knows about Fyffe and their standout RB Logan Anderson. The work-horse back ran for over 2,800 yards a season ago and has continued that level of play this season. There was never any concern about the jump up to 3A this season for Fyffe. They won a state championship the last time they moved up to 3A and return all but two starters from last season's 2A championship team. It's no secret what they're going to do, and that's run the ball right at the opponent and dare them to stop it. This defense also only allows 10 ppg. |
Expect a very physical and likely low-scoring affair where every possession is either a 3-and-out or a 6-minute slog down the field. In games like this, field position and turnovers are usually the difference. |

Prediction: Coosa Christian 17, Fyffe 14 |

Central Clay County holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.
|
|
Comments: There are plenty of teams in 5A capable of taking home a state championship in December, and it wouldn't be a huge shock to see these teams square off again for all the marbles. Central Clay County was the preseason favorite out of the South, and many people had Scottsboro pegged as a dark horse in the North. |
Scottsboro head coach Tyler Vann has yet to lose as the coach of the Wildcats. At Sylvania, the QB run game was a crucial element of his offense, and that is still true at Scottsboro. QB Jake Jones has the arm to stretch the field, but much of his work is done on the ground, both from called runs and the defense breaking contain against the pass. The only team to score more than 13 points on the defense this season was the prolific Boaz offense in a 42-35 win for Scottsboro. |
Central Clay County has rolled through the regular season so far. They've won every game by at least 31 points with the exception of a 35-28 victory over 6A Benjamin Russell, however the back half of the schedule gets more difficult starting with this game. RB LaDamion Boyd is one of the best in the state at his position. DeShaun Gibbons is a Swiss Army Knife of a player, lining up everywhere from QB to RB and WR on offense on top of playing DB on defense. This is one of my favorite teams to watch because of how versatile they are on offense. Most of the time they run the Spread that most teams today seem to run, but in short yardage situations they'll go old school and break out the Wishbone. |
This is a tough one to predict because the season has played out similarly for both teams so far. Tyler Vann is one of the best young, up-and-coming coaches in the state, and it'll be interesting to see how his team fares against the legendary Danny Horn's squad. |

|
|
Comments: This matchup will be a college scout's dream. There will likely be at least a dozen players on the field that will play at the next level, and that estimate is probably on the low end. Montgomery Catholic also puts the state's longest active regular season winning streak, 39 games, on the line, while Saraland puts the longest active home winning streak on the line at 27 games. |
Texas QB commit KJ Lacey went down with an injury a couple weeks ago for Saraland, but the Spartan offense barely slowed down in a 34-12 win last week over McGill-Toolen. With their star QB out, the Spartans got a glimpse of the future in Sophomore QB Jamison Roberts, and the future still looks very bright. His 241-yard, 4 TD performance was punctuated by a tight-window TD pass to Deshawn Spencer in the 1st quarter that split two defenders. Whether Lacey plays or not, the Spartans should be just fine. |
Montgomery Catholic has only had one competitive game so far, a 28-14 win over Pensalcola Catholic out of Florida. The Knights were actually out-gained in that contest, but the defense came away with two huge interceptions in the second half to pull out the win. The going has been slightly more difficult in 5A than it was last season in 4A, but Catholic still hasn't played an in-state game closer than 28 points. For years now, the Knights have been known for their stellar talent at the skill positions, but this year's team might be even better at the line of scrimmage as Senior TE Wilson Hodges and Junior O-linemen Cayden Dees and Daniel Burns will all likely play college ball. |
There's so many potential storylines in this one that it's impossible to name them all. I expect that the depth of talent Saraland has will ultimately win the day, but this should be a really fun game for neutral fans to watch. |

Series:
Hoover and Parker have met 11 times on the field....
Hoover holds a 7-4 edge in the games played.
|
|
Comments: It seems like every year recently there have been people questioning if the top 6A teams are better than the top 7A teams. This game will go a long way to answering that this year. On paper, Parker will probably be the favorite, but Hoover has looked better and better every game they've played. |
Each of Hoover's first three region games were against teams that were expected to compete for playoff spots in 7A Region 3, and the Bucs took care of business in each. They dominated both Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa and Prattville, and managed to grind out an 8-7 win over Hewitt-Trussville. In the past, Hoover beat teams by having more talent than everyone else. While they still have a lot of talent, this year's team plays the most complimentary football I've seen from the Bucs in quite a while. They get after the Quarterback and force a lot of turnovers on defense. Their best player on offense is 4-Star Junior WR Jonah Winston, brother of Jameis Winston, and QB Mac Beason loves getting him the ball. |
Parker is coming off a 48-26 loss to the #8-ranked high school team in the nation from Carrollton, Georgia in a game that was televised on ESPN2. The final score is very deceiving of how that game went, however. I felt like Parker was equal to or better in all but two areas - Quarterback and Special Teams. The Thundering Herd held Carrollton QB Julian Lewis, the #2 overall prospect in the Class of 2025, to just 159 yards passing and picked him off on the opening drive. Parker's 5-Star DB Na'eem Offord was the best player on the field, coming up with an interception and a fumble recovery for a TD. Parker's starting QB was out with an injury, which really hampered their offense, but despite not having much of a passing attack the Herd still ran for nearly 300 yards. Their elite D-line consistently won battles at the line scrimmage. Ultimately, the difference in the game came on special teams, which has been a struggle for Parker all year. Carrollton returned a blocked punt for a TD, blocked two extra points, and recovered a muffed punt by Parker. Despite all of that, this game was 35-26 at the start of the 4th quarter before a Parker turnover helped put the game away. |
Early in the season I said this would be Hoover's best chance to get back to a state championship game in several years, and I stand by that. While their special teams is certainly a concern, Parker really won me over with their performance last week on national television against one of the best teams in the country. |

Comments: A game that a lot of people might have said would be a top matchup of the week has lost some of its luster from the last few weeks. Opelika has started off the year strong with their only loss coming to Auburn. Pike Road has started off slow with losses to Prattville and Enterprise and close wins over region foes like Wetumpka and Percy Julian. |
There is no question that Pike Road is talented with plenty of highly recruited players. Same with Opelika as they have many players going to play division one football. Pike Road did not play badly in their two 7A defeats. But they haven't played lights out in region play. This should be a very talented game that will have a lot of fans in attendance. |
My Prediction. I respect Pike Road for scheduling 7A schools, but once again they fall to a worthy opponent. Give me the Bulldogs by two touchdowns. |

Comments: Is Helena better than we expected this season? I would say so, they have only lost two games by a total of seven points. Their only two losses were to Spain Park and Moody, two teams we can agree are contenders in their classification. |
Oxford is once again a contender but maybe not as strong of one as we thought with their very close win over Mountain Brook. Does Helena pull off the upset? This game is just for bragging rights but also will show us what a likely matchup would be in November. Can Helena get the victory or fall in another close game? |

Will UMS be able to stop Myles Johnson? Possibly but it hasn't been easy for any of their opponents so far. Will TR Miller be able to score on UMS? It certainly won't be easy. |
