Blackwell is a former quarterback at Robert E. Lee in Montgomery. He earned his bachelor's and master's degree from Montevallo University where he also played baseball and is now a member of the hall of fame.
He served as an assistant coach at St. Paul's Episcopal in 2010 and 2011 and followed Perry to St. James a year later to serve as the offensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014.
He built the football program at Catholic Montgomery into a championship team in his six seasons. His teams combined for a 54-19 record including a loss in the state championship game in 2020.
Blackwell spent the 2021 football season as the head coach at Benjamin Russell. He was also the head coach at Jackson Academy in Mississippi for two seasons in 2022-2023 with a record of 17-9.
In 2024 he returned to the Montgomery area as the head football coach at St. James.
