Jack Wood


Jack Wood, a native of Montgomery, grew up in Wetumpka where he played football and was a member of the wrestling team while attending high school at Wetumpka. After graduation from Auburn University in 1973, Coach Wood began his career as an assistant football coach, head wrestling and golf coach at Auburn High School for ten years.

He accepted the coaching job at Hewitt-Trussville in 1983 making him one of the youngest Class 4A coaches in the state at the time. At Hewitt-Trussville he compiled an impressive 141-78 record over his 19-year tenure.

Coach Wood carried 14 of his teams to the state playoffs and three of his teams had 9-1 records during the regular season. The 1992 Huskies squad was runner-up in the state, finishing with a school record of 12 wins and 3 losses. His teams won four region titles during his career.

He turned Hewitt-Trussville into one of the top programs in Class 6A, twice he was named head coach of the Alabama Squad in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. In 1998 Husky Stadium was rededicated as Jack Wood Stadium in his honor.


Coach Wood served as president of the Alabama Coaches Association in 1995 and as a member of the Executive Board of the National Federation of High School Coaches Association. He served on the AHSAA Central Board and as president of the Coaches Association. He was a member of the original All-Star Sports Week Committee

He was named Coach of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers in 1992. Wood was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 2003.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Collinsville completed the 1931 season with a record of 1-4-5. The five ties will forever be a state record since all games are now decided by overtime.
