Walton Wright


Walton Wright graduated from Russellville high school in 1929 where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball. He attended Birmingham-Southern where he was a star performer on the football field, basketball court and baseball diamond.

Wright coached at Madison County and Falkville before he became the head coach at Hackleburg for two seasons in 1935. In 1937 he moved over to Sheffield High School where he would remain for the next 28 seasons as the head football coach.

His teams found success that very first season with an 8-1 record. His 1943 and 1944 teams finished with perfect 9-0 slates.

Wright started the baseball program at Sheffield in 1946 and posted an 80-11 record over 11 years. He coached in the first state All-Star football game in 1948.

In 1999 Sheffield High School football stadium was named for Coach Wright. He is a member of the Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame.

Wright is also a member of the Birmingham-Southern Hall of Fame. Coach Wright was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in1994.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
