Alabama High School Football Head Coaches

Bobby Lott


Robert Lee "Bobby" Lott, III, was born March 29, 1927 in Birmingham. He graduated from Woodlawn High School where he played football and baseball. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, where he served during World War II.

Coach Lott graduated from Howard College, now Samford, in 1949, where he played football. He also held a Masters Degree and a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Alabama.

Lott became the head football coach at Hubbertville the same fall he graduated from college. He stayed there for 7 seasons and produced back to back 10-0 records in 1951 and 1952 and a 24-game winning streak. The 1952 team was a regional state champion as named by the Birmingham News. With a seven year basketball record of 90-43, he guided two Hubbertville teams to the state tournament.


His next stop came at Hamilton in 1956 where in his first two years the team went 18-2. His record at Hamilton was 61-33-6 in ten seasons at the helm.

He would later serve as an assistant coach at Banks in the 1960s. After completing 20 years of coaching, he entered school administration as Principal of Hemphill Elementary School and Ensley High School. He was also Executive Director of the National Education Center.

In 1980 he was inducted into the Woodlawn High School Hall of Fame. Lott was inducted into the Marion County Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, and the Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 2005.

Coach Lott accepted a commission as a Second Lt. in the 877 Engineering Battalion in the Alabama National Guard. He retired in 1981 with 29 years of service as a Brigadier General. Lott was also a member of the Birmingham Touchdown Club, Hoover Country Club, Hoover Veterans Committee, and received the Hoover 2008 Freedom Award.

Brigadier General, (Retired) Robert Lee "Coach Bobby" Lott, III, age 85, of Pelham, Alabama, and formerly of Hamilton, Alabama, passed away Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012.
