Alabama High School Football Head Coaches

Charles Lee

Charles William Lee, a native of Greenville, Alabama, attended Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, graduating in 1958. He then attended Huntingdon College, receiving a degree in physical education in 1962 and was named the most outstanding athlete. He obtained his Masters degree from Troy State University.

Coach Lee began his career in the public school system in 1962, when he was hired to teach and coach sports at Bellingrath Junior High School.

During his tenure, he won a city championship in every sport offered by the Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department, and was instrumental in starting junior high school wrestling in Montgomery.

He joined the staff at the new Jeff Davis High School in 1968, teaching American History and physical education, and serving as administrative assistant to the principal. He was also an assistant football coach, which placed him in the unique position of being involved in every single football game ever played at the school during his tenure.

In 1980 he landed the head coaching position at Jeff Davis. During his career at Jeff Davis High School, Coach Lee had two undefeated seasons and three seasons where his team won 12 games. Two of his teams made it to the state Class 6A finals, losing to Central of Tuscaloosa 7-6 in 1995, and winning the state title over Mountain Brook, 28-12 in 1996.

Charles Lee was named Montgomery Metro Coach of the Year in numerous sports and four times was chosen the state football coach of the year. Lee coached twice in the North-South All Star game and on two occasions helped lead Alabamas team in the Alabama-Mississippi All Star Classic.

He was a board member of the Bryant-Jordan Award, as an advisor to the Hitchcock Award Committee, and as a football representative for the AHSAA Third District.

Coach Lee was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame at its 10th annual induction ceremony held on March 20, 2000.
