After looking through our point spreads for this week's games, there were a few games that stood out to me as having upset potential.

Feel free to reply and tell me why I'm wrong or add your own picks. If there is enough interest/engagement this could become a regular series.

J.B. Pennington (-9) vs Walter Wellborn--This isn't as much about Pennington as it is Wellborn being a sleeper team in 3A this season.

Trinity (-13) vs Reeltown--Self-inflicted mistakes cost Reeltown against 3A South favorites T.R. Miller last week. That game should have been much closer than it was, and even if they make the same mistakes again I'm not sure Trinity will have that ability to take advantage of it.

Shelby County (-5) vs Holtville--Holtville won this game handily last season, and with their QB returning I would expect the same result, albeit in a more competitive game.

Marbury (-5) vs Bayside Academy--This is probably the game I'm least confident in, as Marbury is a program on the rise and Bayside really struggled offensively against St. Michael last week, but the talent advantage should lie with Bayside.

Hewitt-Trussville (-17) vs Gadsden City--This has nothing to do with Hewitt, who will be a contender in 7A and would probably be my pick to win this game anyway. I just think 17 is an awful large number for what on paper appears to be a pretty even matchup. I'll be surprised if this is more than a two possession game.

Russellville at Mars Hill -7
I'm too impressed by Mars Hill's statement beatdown of Madison Academy to make them underdogs. I know Russellville has Phinizee but MH beat the Golden Tigers last year and I think they do it again.

Arab vs Cherokee County -11
CC might be taking a step back this season but I think they'll be able to beat the Knights. First real test for new coach Routon and I think Kelley beats him with experience.

West Morgan vs Brooks -5
WM has tried to sell us the idea of "reload, not rebuild" after losing nearly all starters on both sides of the ball. Last week's shutout of Randolph reeled in a lot more buyers of that idea. I'm not quite there yet. Seems too trendy to me. Brooks will likely have one of 4A's best offenses. Looking for another basketball score but with the Lions as winners this year.

Huffman vs Columbia -7
Maybe just an emotional pick here because I hate seeing these super long slumps but I'm calling it anyway. COLUMBIA WINS!

Pell City(-25) vs. Coosa Christian: I may be the only person that thinks the Pell City win wasn?t as impressive as it looked on paper. Coosa makes a statement and keeps this one close! Pell City 27 Coosa Chris. 22

Southside Gadsden(-21) at Hokes Bluff : This could be a good one! Can Hokes Bluff get the victory? I believe so! Hokes Bluff 20 Southside 17

UMS-Wright(-23) vs. LeFlore: Could it be as close as last year? Can UMS get the offense caught up with the Defense? We shall see!! UMS 17 LeFlore 6

Shoals Christian(-1) vs. Brilliant : Not sure it?s considered an upset, but this game will be ALL Brilliant! Brilliant 42 Shoals 12

Marion County(-6) vs. Phillips Bear Creek : This game has ZERO chance to be close, Phillips has only 14 players and Marion County is loaded. This game gets ugly quick! Marion CO 52 Phillips 0

Go Lions

I have a two games in the North where there could be some potential upset.

Buckhorn over Athens - two very good programs but I watched Buckhorn get better every week during the season last year and with their win over Decatur last week it looks like they are carrying that momentum into this season.

Mae Jemison over Huntsville - Huntsville looks to be rebuilding somewhat this season with a new staff and new starters on both sides of the ball. Mae Jemison has talent at every position and its only a matter of time before it everything clicks and they make a run.

Tiny spreads but I like the underdog in both.

Colbert Heights (-1) at Carbon Hill

Cherokee (-1) vs Woodville

Those Brooks and Plainview games were definitely on my radar for this week.
