I've been using the links to the Google newspaper searches the last few days, and have been using it to try to fill in scores of Shades Valley's other sports, to some success. One thing I found out was Shades Valley used to have an intense basketball rivalry with Tuscaloosa High in the 60's due in part to a meeting they had in the 1960 District 5 playoffs. Tuscaloosa was the favorite to win state in the 1960 season, but met a talented SV team in the semifinals of the District playoffs. SV won that meeting in triple overtime and went on to win the district finals, but lost the first round of the Class AA tournament. This game sparked a fire in Tuscaloosa High basketball, as that game was constantly mentioned in the newspaper for the next decade as being one of the reasons for the teams future successes. Tuscaloosa would go on to win several state titles, as well as playing in and winning 9 of 10 SV Invitational tournaments along the way. One of the more interesting games between the two teams during that span was a meeting they had in the consolation game of the 1962 Class AA state tournament. Tuscaloosa and Sidney Lanier had also developed a fierce rivalry during that span and met several times for the state title, and were expected to meet in the finals in 1962 as well. In the final four Sidney Lanier defeated Shades Valley, but Tuscaloosa was upset by Selma, setting up a fourth meeting for that year in the consolation. Shades Valley lost that game by a large margin, but what makes this game memorable is not the result, but a piece of trivia. The AHSAA had decided to toy with an experimental idea for basketball - the 3 point shot - and decided to let the participants of the Class AA consolation game be the first to implement it. There were only four attempts made during the entire game, and only one 3 point basket was made - by a Shades Valley player. So it appears a Shades Valley player scored the first 3 point shot in state history.

Something humorous I found during my scanning of the pages I found a headline Mike might think is funny. It scans for 'Shades Valley', so it came up with an interesting heading. It said 'Piedmont Shades Valley Cubs'. It wasn't even meaning Shades Valley, lol.

Shane that would be the Alexandria Valley Cubs a team Piedmont has played almost since the started athletics and has had very little luck beating. We don't play each other now unless we meet in the Calhoun Tournament. I was the bookeeper for Piedmont back in the Area Tournament when we scored on a last second shot to beat them for the championship and the Birmingham area refs and the Heflin clock keeper met a mid court and took away our basket after it had been put on the board. The head referee is now in the hall of fame but that is one call he missed. The ball was in the square when the horn went off. The Anniston Star had a picture the next day of the scoreboard with no time left and Piedmont one point ahead.

Yeah, I knew it was Alexandria once I saw the article. It was just funny they worded it that way. That article was actually in the Gadsden paper which I found was also archived to some degree online. I'm finding it interesting to find out Shades Valley's history in basketball with Tuscaloosa High. They only met once in football, but seemed to be big rivals on the court, though Tuscaloosa had most of the success.
