Cordell named Curry football coach

Jace Cordell has been named the Curry High School head football coach. The move was made official at the Walker Board of Education meeting on Thursday. Cordell served as an assistant coach on Shane Smothers staff at Cordova High School last year. Cordell, a 2009 Cordova High School graduate, was a two-time All-State player for the Blue Devils and a key member of the 2007 state championship team.

Tough sleddin', particularly in the higher classifications, for someone to do all three.

90+% of coaches in this state are hired as teachers and only earn a supplement for coaching/AD/etc. That's not a big deal nor noteworthy. so the quote, on the surface, isn't odd at all. But the board member feeling compelled to say it in an interview stood out to me. Academics should be (and IS for the most part) a school's priority.

So, maybe it's not odd, and I'm way off...but it stood out, as I read the article.

Lexington hires alum Blake Killen. Killen was the head coach at Randolph from 2018-19, and has been an assistant at James Clemens the past two seasons.
