We at the AHSFHS want to hear your picks for who should be the Coach of the Year in each classification and why. We talk about it a lot this week on the podcast.

Dale Pruitt in 4A. Missed the playoffs last year to pretty much blowing everyone out this year. You could see they had some good ball players last year, but they are playing excellent team football, and playing with a ton of confidence. A team without 'elite' talent, but a bunch of dudes that have been developed into sound and tough football players.

Robert Evans, Vestavia Hills, 6A. He always gets the most out of his players. They beat a semifinalist, Auburn High, by 28 in the regular season. Auburn won the rematch, but it was a battle.

Seth Parker from Priceville in 5A. 2-8 in his first year after the Bulldogs moved up to 5A. Finished 8-4, second round of the playoffs, included one of the most dramatic comeback victories I've ever seen in the first round.

1A - Brian Bradford of McKenzie or Brad Abbott of Maplesville
2A - Matt Johnson, defending state championship coach, had to replace 8 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense and Reeltown is back in the quarterfinals for the 4th straight year! 91 wins in 10 years?
3A - Darrell Higgins of Mars Hill or Michael Davis of Geraldine
4A - Jeremy Vines of Bullock County!
5A - Antonio Coleman of Williamson
6A - Quite a few I could name here! Kirk Johnson of Ben Russell, Stuart Floyd of Clay Chalkville, Granger Shook of Pike Road, Scott Basden of Muscle Shoals, Chris Yeager of Mountain Brook
7A - Keith Etheridge of Auburn, Eric Scott of Baker, or Bryan Moore of Opelika

I'm gonna throw in a word for Tyler Jeffreys at Red Bay. From 2-8 (and only making the playoffs because in a 6-team region, they got awful Tharptown and Tanner teams as their 5 and 6) to 9-3, a region title, and playing a pretty good Southeastern team down to the wire.

Seth Parker, as I've mentioned, is the son of friends of mine (and my mom's best friend in high school), so I have a soft spot. I know it's homerish, but with all that happened before the season, I'm throwing in a word for Dustin Goodwin at Russellville. 7-5 normally wouldn't be, but losing your entire line AND the 5A Back of the Year should have ruined Russellville and it didn't.

1A: Josh Harris (McIntosh) -- This team has had pretty much zero success for over a decade, and they came out of nowhere to beat some pretty good teams and win a playoff game.

2A: R.J. McDonald (Lanett) -- This team went from barely squeaking into the playoffs last year to knocking off defending champs Reeltown for a region title...and they're still playing.

3A: Carvel Jones (Cottage Hill) -- From 2-8 last year to 10-2 this year, and their only two losses were by respectable scores to Bayside Academy and Southside Selma, the two best teams in 3A South.

4A: Jeremy Vines (Bullock Co.) -- There's several worthy candidates in 4A, but getting the first ever playoff win for a school that's been playing football since 1909, and then to back it up with a 2nd round win, makes this an obvious choice for me.

Honorable Mention: Mark Sanders (Ashville) -- I'll still argue that this is one of, if not the most difficult place to win at in my part of the state. Making the playoffs at Ashville is the mark of a great coach.

5A: Seth Parker (Priceville) -- Going from 2-8 last year to pulling off a massive 1st Round upset of Guntersville this year is a huge turnaround.

6A: Kirk Johnson (Benjamin Russell) -- Even with a talented team like Benjamin Russell, I expected it to take a couple seasons for Coach Johnson to adjust to Class 6A, but he's picked up right where he left off with Montgomery Catholic. Now Benjamin Russell has Birmingham well within their sights.

Honorable Mention: Antonio Nelson (Bessemer City) -- When he first got there, this was a BAD football team. It's taken a few years, but Coach Nelson has turned this into a solid program that just won its first playoff game since 2018.

7A: Patrick Nix (Central Phenix City) -- Probably seems like low-hanging fruit, but their only loss was to IMG Academy, and they've pretty much dominated their entire schedule.

4A - Mike Sims - WS Neal, first year coach, takes the Eagles to the 3rd round for the technically 5th time in program history (1971 3rd round was the championship game), and the first time in 22 years. The Eagles have three losses, #1 St. Michael, #2 Jackson and #1 in the rural classification in Florida Bloutstown. WS Neal gets Jackson this week, Neal has improved since Jackson beat them in the regular season, I am not predicting a WSN win, but anything can happen.

No offense intended, but every win Addison has is against weak opponents. The only good team they have played was Good Hope and they beat Addison as they should have, handily.

olebahlcoach, I can say the same thing for a ton of teams still left in the playoffs. Most small schools play only two or three decent teams a year until they get to the playoffs. That's why Addison routinely schedules their 3 games they control against larger classifications. This year they scheduled WCHS, 2A county rival, and they were average after being very good last year. Good Hope, 4a next door rival, whom they have played for years. Still around in the playoffs. Decatur Heritage, 2A perennial power in recent years. Who knew last year that they would drop off the face of the Earth this year.

You can't help that Hackleburg, region rival, graduated everyone from last year's once in a twenty-year team. Meek in my opinion underachieved this year for whatever reason. Their region sucked as I have previously stated in an earlier post this year, but you don't control who is in your region.

This is why I have advocated for area play where you can schedule more teams locally that maybe larger but are decent. I know Addison has scheduled all the Cullman County schools, except Fairview and Holly Pond in the recent past. This is great for crowd turnout and interest. All those schools are larger than Addison.

I just think that yes, Addison schedule had 6 weak schools on it but 1 was average and 2 decent, with 1 good team. I would say pretty much the same for most small schools. Still I don't think anyone is going to stop the Maplesville/Wadley train this year.
