What's the worse record ever for a finals team?
This stems from my Scottsboro thread. I can definitely see them winning this week, and they have potential to beat Moody. Obviously the Moody game will be a very tough task.
So, has a .600 regular season team ever made the finals? Or a .500 team? Or what about a team that had a losing regular season record? |

The 1999 Courtland Chiefs won the Class 1A title with a .400 regular season, but their losses were: - 12 pt loss to Hazlewood (2A semifinalist, finished 2nd in AWSA 2A) - 15 pt loss to Holt (4A) - 1 pt 2OT loss to Addison (Finished 7th in ASWA 2A) - 22 pt loss to Handley (4A) - 32 pt loss to Walker (5A quarterfinalist, undefeated regular season, finished 2nd in ASWA 5A) - 15 pt loss to South Pittsburg (Undefeated TN Division 1 Class A Champs) They somehow finished the season ranked 10th in ASWA 1A |

I present to you--the 1986 Gadsden Tigers. 4-5 (.444 winning percentage)

1986 Gadsden team started the season 1-5. Finished the regular season 5-5 and won the Class 5A championship over Homewood. Did not win a playoff game by more than 6 points. The most points they scored in any game that year was 18. Their largest margin of victory was a 14-3 win over Litchfield to open the season.
A truly amazing season.

1999 Lee Montgomery team went 4-6 in the regular season but made it to the 6A state championship game before losing to Clay-Chalkville. At one point during the season they were 2-5.

I remember this team. They won three rematches in the playoffs on the way to the championship at Legion Field, where they lost in OT |

| With 1999 having 2 teams making the state championships with losing records, I assume this is why the AHSAA abandoned area play for region play. |

They abandoned area play for region play mainly because with only four teams in most areas the best teams would have to find seven non-area opponents to fill their schedule. It became nearly impossible for the best teams to find ten games. That was the case with Courtland in the early 1990s. They were a 1A school playing 4A, 5A and even 6A teams.
Imagine Fyffe, Thompson, Clay-Chalkville or Mars Hill having to find seven non-area opponents next year. Why would any coach want to schedule them if you don't have to? Mars Hill would beat most of the 5A schools this year. Look at what they did to Scottsboro a few weeks ago.

Russellville wasn't a great 5A, and we just got run off the field by Briarwood--and in a season that has Fairview and Deshler and Briarwood still playing, Mars Hill was far and away the best team RHS saw this season. And you're right--I feel like Hazlewood and Courtland would have years back then where they would go like 4-3 and play one home game a year because absolutely nobody would play them in the regular season and if they did, it was only if they would travel. Nobody outside the locals were coming to Town Creek and Courtland. |

Yea David hit it on the head. Was lots of years Courtland could hardly get anyone scheduled and if they did it was a lot of bigger schools, I'm talking 4A and up for those poor guys in 1A. Wild days.
Region play is a lot better IMHO |
