Hot Takes
#1 - At least 2 Number One teams lose this week.
#2 - Some fans will write off a team that loses Friday night that will make a deep playoff run.
#3 - At least 3 5A schools will beat a 6A team.
#4 - Columbia will win one if not both of their first two games.
#5 - Some fan near the top of the stadium will yell "Throw the ball" midway through the 3rd quarter.
#6 - The media will want to hand a Blue Map to one team after a huge upset in week one.
#7 - A certain Coach will add 100 yards to his QB's passing yards this Saturday morning.
#8 - At least 3 games I want to watch on NFHS Network will be too out of focus to see anything.
#9 - I will have to see 1,000 terribly done and incorrect AI generated pictures on twitter this weekend.
#10 - Someone on Twitter Spaces or Facebook Live will talk about more than 3 teams they know nothing about.

Honorable Mention - Someone in the so called "Media" will copy and paste my work on social media and call it their own tomorrow. OH WAIT... That actually happens every day.

Clay-Chalkville goes undefeated, wins another blue map and threatens to crack the top 15 nationally.

In no particular order:

#1 Geraldine will be the second best team in Class 3A...but won't win their region.
#2 Oneonta is back and reaches at least the Quarterfinals.
#3 Curry finishes .500 or better for the first time in a VERY long time.
#4 W.S. Neal will win 3A Region 1 and go undefeated...but Jackson will make it further in the playoffs.
#5 Fayetteville will pull off at least one upset between Wadley, Winterboro, and Loachapoka.
#6 Maplesville might end up as the greatest 1A team of all time, and they'll be good enough to win 2A and 3A too.
#7 West Morgan ends up 4th in Class 4A Region 7
#8 Benjamin Russell comes within one play of winning the state championship.
#9 Baker will end Region 1's playoff win drought in the highest classification.
#10 A championship contender will miss the playoffs after getting turned in by an opposing coach in Week 10 for playing an ineligible player earlier in the season.

I've noticed some buzz around the Curry Yellow Jackets. What happened, I know they were close to the playoffs last year but I chalked that more up to a horrific region than I did anything they'd done. Am I missing something?

(I was a Yellow Jacket way back in the day, so I have always harbored something of a soft spot for Curry. But they've been SO bad for so long I am surprised to see how many folks seem to be high on them this year).

Huge news. When Columbia HS in Huntsville last won a game:

  • Prince was alive

  • The Chicago Cubs had never won a World Series

  • Leonardo DiCaprio didn't have an Oscar

  • Donald Trump had never been President

  • Muhammed Ali was alive

  • Harambe wasn't famous

  • Mother Teresa wasn't a saint

  • Pokemon Go wasn't invented

  • Nobody had heard of the stupid clown scare

  • Stranger Things hadn't happened

General thought:

How unfair is it for 6A Region 3?

Thompson & Hoover are perpetually in the playoffs, so there are realistically two spots remaining for the other teams. I know Hoover was down last year, but they're 2-0 and very likely taking one of the four playoff spots.

Hewitt-Trussville escaped with a win over Auburn.
Prattville had a dominating out-of-state win.
Spain Park had an underwhelming win vs Sparkman.
Vestavia Hills thumped perennial challenger Parker.

And only two of those last four teams make the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Region 4 is going to send at least three sacrificial lambs into the playoffs.

I think AHSAA should consider a new format for 6A that considers the historically proven disparity between regions.

Well it is likely all of those teams make it since 6A has the 24 team playoff, unless something happened that I didn?t hear about.

Actually, the AHSAA did just that. 6A will have 6 teams making it to the playoffs from each region. Region Champs and Runners-up will have a bye in round 1. You can find the bracket at on the AHSAA's website. Just go to football, then click on the Sports Book at the top of the page. 6A-Region 3 is definitely a tough one. I think the Hewitt-Trussville win was pretty impressive, especially considering they had a soph. quarterback making his first start. There will be some really great matchups all year in the region.

Russellville 21, Mars Hill 7 and the longest winning streak in the state is over.

Cullman 14, Hartselle 9 surprised me.

MA 39 Catholic 26. Great win for MA. McBride is legitimately fast at QB and the OL seems pretty good despite not being huge like the ones from the past few MA teams that really popped in the playoffs.

Catholic's play calling was baffling. Kept trying to force the pass despite knowing the pass rush is one of MA's strengths. MA picked Blackwell off three times and lived in Catholic's backfield. Really surprised they didn't just run 26 a lot more but got too behind in the second half to do that.

As the longest winning streak in the state ends, let's go to the team with the longest losing streak until last week.

Columbia is now 2-0. 42-26 over East Limestone. I don't think they're a state title contender, but at least 2 wins after the last 10 years is legit.

Maybe not as crazy as last week but still some baffling scores and upsets.

How about UMS Wright over Mountain Brook? Shocking...
