This is the oldest rivalry in the state of Alabama. The first game was
played in 1914 and the two have met every year except 1918, 1919, 1924 and
1925. The two have met every season since 1926. With a streak of 96
consecutive seasons having played each other, this rivalry trails only the
Jackson-Clarke County rivalry for the longest continuous rivalry.
Guntersville has
dominated the series recently winning fifteen of the last eighteen meetings to
take a 54-47-6 lead in the storied series. Most years the game was played on
Thanksgiving Day prior to the beginning of the state playoffs.
The game was generally
the final game of each season and played on Thanksgiving Day in front of a
packed stadium. Fights between the two teams were common during the game in
the early years but have been few in recent times. A fight broke out during
the 1971 game and both schools were placed on probation by the AHSAA.
Apparently there was an
incident involving the kidnapping of a goat that led to a brawl and games
between the two schools not being played in 1924 and 1925. T.J. Carnes
states in his book "Out of the Sand" that Guntersville began putting an
Aggie helmet on a goat and bringing it to the annual matchup.
Teams and fans rode a
train from Guntersville in 1923 to the game in Albertville along with this
goat. The Aggies pulled out a 13-0 victory when some of the fans decided it
was a good idea to kidnap this prized goat. After a melee, the Wildcats rescued
their mascot and left town with the goat on the roof of the train.
Guntersville capped
off their first perfect 10-0 regular season since 1955 when they topped the
Aggies 21-16 in the 100th meeting of the rivals in 2014. That game
ironically was played on Halloween night.
The school annuals called
the game a rivalry as early as the 1920s. In 1927 Guntersville (9-0) capped
off a perfect season with a 6-0 victory over the Aggies. It was the only
loss of the season for Albertville.
The first game was played
on October 24, 1914 between the two schools that are separated by less than
eight miles along highway 431.
One odd fact is that in
2004 Guntersville defeated the Aggies 39-7. It was the only win for either
team the entire season. In 1927 Guntersville (9-0) defeated Albertville
(8-1) in a battle of undefeated teams. It happened again in 1931 and once
again the Wildcats beat the Aggies 26-0.
