Dora and Cordova have met a total of 92 times on the football field making
it one of the oldest rivalries in the state. Cordova leads the series with a
record of 48-41-2.
The two schools
are about twelve miles apart in Walker County. Since 1994 the teams have met
in the first game of the football season. Over the years they have usually
played early in the season each year.
The teams first met
during the 1925 season when Dora and Cordova fielded their first teams and
Cordova was known as Bankhead High School. They have met every season since
except a few seasons in the early years. They have played every season since
1935.
Dora's 62-0 victory in 1993 was the biggest ever for the Bulldogs in the series. A year later, Cordova won 3-0 on a game-winning field goal.
The biggest upset in the
series may have come in 1995 when the two teams met in the first game of the
season. Dora came away with a 25-20 victory and went on to win five games
that year. Cordova regrouped and won the Class 3A state championship with a
6-0 victory over B.B. Comer.
In recent history the rivalry has been streak with each Dora winning six in
a row (2001-06), Cordova winning four in a row (2007-10) and Dora taking
four in a row.
