The battle of the Blue and Gold was first played in 1931, the first season
Fairhope fielded a football team. They have played every season since.
Most of the games were played at the end of each season until recently. The
schools are about 28 miles apart and separated by Fish River.
While there have not been
many major upsets in this series there have been more than a few surprising
results. In 1987 the two met in a season ending matchup with the Pirates
entering the game with a 8-1 record against the undefeated Lions. The much
anticipated great game never materialized as Fairhope dominated Foley by a
score of 52-8.
As recently as 2014,
the Lions beat an undefeated Fairhope team in the second round of the
playoffs after falling to them during the regular season.
During the 1944 season
the two teams played twice with each winning one of the games. It was the
only loss for either team that year.
The winning team receives
a huge trophy to which remains at the school for the next 365 days until the
next game. The trophy first came into existence in the early 1980s and comes
from the team colors. While Foley wears navy blue and gold, the Pirates
dress in royal blue and gold.
While
the Foley vs. Robertsdale and Fairhope vs. Daphne games are important to
each school, it is the Battle of the Blue and Gold that most fans look
forward to each year. Total Meetings: 93 Series Record: Foley leads 51-38-4 Home Record: Fairhope: 16-24-1
