Game MVP:
Records: Homewood (13-1); Dothan (9-4)
Coaches: Alvin Bresler, Homewood and Bobby Sirmon, Dothan
Game: Played Saturday December 7, 1974 at Legion Field in Birmingham
Summary: In only the third season of
football for the school, Homewood laid claim to their first
state championship with a hard fought 10-7 victory over Dothan.
The Tigers would score first on a Greg Ramsey 70 yard run for a
touchdown. Tim Calloway would come back to kick a second quarter
field goal to cut the halftime margin to 7-3 in favor of Dothan.
In the third quarter Homewood quarterback Murray Legg, who
completed 7 of 15 passes for 72 yards, would pitch out to
running back Lee Edwards for a 21 yard touchdown and the final
10-7 margin of victory. The Tigers would mount a late effort
that would result in a missed field goal from 44 yards that
would have tied the game.
Dothan was also making their first playoff appearance
and the Tigers played without several key players as a flu
epidemic struck the team in the days prior to the game.
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
