1983 State Championship Final Summaries


1983 was the last year for only four classification. In 1984 the AHSAA would go to a new six classification format.
1983 was the first year the AHSAA would allow overtime to settle tie games after regulation.

Summary:
          Lee Thomas scored on a one yard run in the second quarter to give Oak Grove a 6-3 lead in the Class 2A state championship game. Thomas plunged across the goal line with 2:26 remaining before halftime  in an error filled game played in a steady rain.
          Oak Grove lost six fumbles while Cottonwood lost four and threw two interceptions. Cottonwood got on the scoreboard first on a 25 yard field goal by Ricky Ward.
          The win was the first state championship for Oak Grove.
