By the slimmest of margins, the Guntersville Wildcats won their first state football championship
with a 28-27 win over Thomasville at Legion Field in Birmingham.
Junior quarterback Chaz Rogers, completed 14 of 18 passes for three touchdowns and 237 yards
in leading the Wildcats to their title. The performance earned him most valuable player honors
for the game.
With Thomasville leading 27-21 and 7:27 left in the fourth quarter, Guntersville
started a drive at its own 19-yard line. Shannon Cahill caught
56 yard pass and four plays later, Josh Gunther scored on a 2-yard touchdown run.
Joel Svennson added the
extra point and Guntersville had the lead.
The Wildcat defense sealed the deal, as Thomasville 's final two possessions ended with a missed field goal and an interception by Tucker Bridges.
