Bobby Overton, a native of Childersburg, played football for the legendary John Cox on teams that won 27 out of 30 games. Following graduation he continued to play football at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

After receiving his degree in 1964 he accepted a teaching and assistant coaching position at B.B. Comer High School in Sylacauga, and became the head football coach in 1967.

During his 38 years with B.B. Comer, Coach Overtons teams combined for a 202-176-4 record. They also completed two undefeated seasons (1990, 1995), won seven area championships, and competed in 12 state playoffs. His overall playoff record was 15-12.

Overton was selected to coach in the state all-star game on two occasions, was named Talladega County Coach of the Year 15 times, and served with distinction with the AHSAA on the Sixth District Board and on the No-Pass, No-Play Committee.

He was elected president of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association in the mid 1990s. Overton made instrumental in selecting a neutral site for championship games during this time. The idea evolved into the Super 6 Football Championships at Birminghams Legion Field.
