Danny Matherson played defensive end, kicker and quarterback from 1971 to 1974 for the Hale County Wildcats. He received his degree from the University of Alabama. Following graduation from college, Matherson served as an assistant at Greensboro and Francis Marion High Schools. Matherson landed his first head coaching job at Akron High School in 1982. His three teams finished a combined 19-12-1. The 1982 team finished 11-1-1, losing in the state championship game to Sweet Water 14-7. He served as an assistant football coach at Hillcrest High School In Tuscaloosa from 1985-86. In 1987, Matherson accepted the head football coach and athletic director positions at Hale County High School. He replaced Ken Johnson, who had resigned earlier in the year to move over to West End Christian. He remained at Hale County for the next seventeen years, retiring following the 2003 season. Matherson led the Wildcats to eight playoffs spots and two region titles. His overall record is 111-103-1 in 20 seasons as a head football coach in Alabama. Matherson would later coach softball at American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa. |
