 Earl Webb

Earl O. Webb was born and raised in Hanceville. His high school football experiences were slim as Hanceville suspended football from 1943-1947. Were it not for playing on the community team his football career would have been non-existent. He graduated from Hanceville in 1946 before embarking on a two year stint in the military.

Webb enrolled at St. Bernard Junior College in Cullman and became a three sport letterman in football, baseball and basketball. He went on to play football at Florence State before beginning his coaching career.

Webb took the head coaching position at Falkville in 1952 where he remained for three seasons. Prior to his arrival, Falkville had not won a game in over two years. His first team finished 7-2-1. Webb also coached the basketball team at Falkville.

He moved over to Arab for seven seasons beginning in 1955 where his last five teams had winning records. In 1962 he accepted the head coaching job at Lanett High School. There, Coach Webb took over a team that had gone 1-8-1 the previous year and turned them into a 7-2-1 winner his first season.

Webbs second Lanett team would finish the season 10-0 and be named State Champions by the Birmingham News and Montgomery Advertiser.

In 1967 Webb headed off to Decatur for another rebuilding job. In 1966 the Red Raiders had gone 0-10. Three years later they would be 9-1. In 1971 his Decatur team won their first playoff State Championship by defeating Butler 8-0 in the title match.

His overall coaching record stands at 203-92-14. Webb won two state titles and several coach of the year honors over the span of his career. He served as president of the AHSAA Coaches Association and served on the AHSAA Central Board of Control for five years. Webb twice coached the North-South All-Star game.

Decatur High dedicated its field house in honor of Coach Earl Webb. Webb is a member of the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 1993. Coach Earl Webb would pass away at the age of 77.
