 Harold Lutz 

Harold "Red" Lutz was a graduate of Clinton High School in Iowa and the University of Alabama. He played football for the Crimson Tide from 1948-1951 where he earned a letter his last three seasons. Lutz was a kicker and played end for the Tide.

In 1957, Lutz became the head football coach at Fairfield High School near Birmingham. He stayed there for the next dozen seasons before moving over to Tuscaloosa High School in 1969.

He was named coach of the year twice during his 13 years at Fairfield where his wrestling teams won three state titles.

Coach Lutz accepted the football head coaching job at Tuscaloosa High School in 1969. He led the Black Bears for ten seasons until the school closed and was consolidated with Druid to form Central Tuscaloosa.

He remained at Central for another three seasons before retiring from his head coaching duties.

He also coached wrestling at Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa athletic program was named the best in the county under his leadership as athletic director in the early 1970s.


Coach Lutzs overall football record is 151-86-8 in 25 seasons as a head coach. Five of his teams finished the season with only a single loss on their record. He also coached his teams to four playoff appearances.

Lutz was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 1995.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
