Harold Wells was a standout wide receiver and kick returner at West End High School in Birmingham. He also played football at Kentucky State before getting his degree in 1981.

After serving as a graduate assistant at Livingston, Wells spent four seasons as the offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech before becoming the passing game coordinator at Livingston. The following two seasons he served as the offensive coordinator at Elbert County High in Georgia.

Wells was the offensive coordinator at Scottsboro in 1990 and had the same position at Austin High School in 1991.
