East Highland Mighty Indians
Haywood Scissum
Haywood Scissum graduated from Carver High School in Gadsden and got his degree from Tuskegee Institute. Scissum began his head coaching career at East Highland high school in Sylacauga where he served for 18 seasons.
His 1969 team finished the season 9-0 and outscored their opponents 498-6. His overall record at East Highland was 135-30-12 over the span of his career. Scissums Mighty Indians also laid claim to two state championships and three undefeated teams. They also had a 34 game unbeaten streak.
Over his head coaching tenure Scissums teams won nine District Titles and he was named District Coach of the Year nine times.
In 1970 Scissum took the head coaching job at Tuskegee Institute where he remained for ten seasons and retired with a 66-48-1 record with the Golden Tigers.
Scissum was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 1991.
