 James Glover

James E. Glover was born in 1916 in Moundville, Alabama. He attended Hale County High School, where he was a three-sport star. Glover was an outstanding football player and received a football scholarship to play at East Mississippi Junior College and later played at Delta State, where he graduated in 1940.

That same fall, he landed his first head coaching job at Brookwood High School where he remained for only two season before Uncle Sam called. He spent the next three and one half years in the U.S. Navy serving his country during World War II.

Upon returning to his native Alabama, Glover became the head coach at Jefferson County High School (Tarrant) in 1945 for two years. His next stop would be his longest and most impressive. He made his mark on the high school coaching ranks when in 1947 he accepted the head coaching job at Etowah High School.

For the next 31 seasons he guided the Blue Devils from the sidelines. Glovers first five teams went 44-2-3. His overall record at Etowah was an impressive 189-100-16. Glover coached six undefeated squads and a State Championship team.

Glovers 1950 Blue Devils team finished the season 10-0 and were named State Champions by most newspapers around the state.

The Blue Devils lost the first game of the 1948 season and the last game of the 1951 campaign. In between they reeled off a 35 game winning streak.

Glover led his teams at Etowah to 24 Gadsden Charity Bowl appearances. He came back in 1986 for one season with Coosa Christian where his team finished 12-0 and won the Alabama Christian Athletic Conference Championship.

He received several Coach of the Year awards and was named to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. Etowah High School renamed their stadium in his honor. Glover is a member of the Etowah County Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 1992.

Coach James Glover passed away Sunday, July 12, 1987 at the age of 71 following a battle with cancer.
