Joe Hubbert
Joe Hubbert was born March 30, 1937 in Fayatte, Alabama. He was a graduate of Winfield High School and the University of Chattanooga in 1961. He also held a Masters degree from Mississippi State.
His first coaching job came in 1961 when he accepted the head football coaching job at Marion County High School in Guin. He not only was the football coach but also the head baseball and basketball coach of the Red Raiders.
Hubbert stayed at Marion County for seven seasons before coaching at Eufaula in the fall of 1968. He carried two basketball teams to the State Tournament with the 1964-65 squad winning 23 games and capturing third place.
Hubbert served as an assistant coach at Deshler in 1969. He coached at Cochran High School in Georgia from 1970-1972 with a 19-14 record.
In 1973, he took over the football program at Winfield High School. For the next 21 seasons he led the Pirates to a 140-86-1 record. When he finally left the field and the classroom, it was because of health issues and not a lack of desire. His overall football record is 195-123-6 as a head coach.
His teams at Winfield won seven area and region titles and qualified for the playoffs a total of 12 times. His 1976 squad went 10-2-1 and lost in the semi-finals of the football playoffs.
After his retirement he devoted much of his time as the Owner of the Boars Butt, a well known and popular BBQ restaurant in his hometown. Even as a Cook, Hubbert continued in his championship ways. The Boars Butt was named one of Alabamas Top 20 Restaurants in a Birmingham News Survey.
Hubbert is a member of the first class of the Marion County Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 1999. Joe Hubbert passed away November 22, 2011.
