 Joey Jones

Joseph Russell "Joey" Jones was born October 29, 1962 in Mobile, Alabama. He is a former professional football player and a collegiate football coach.

Jones lettered with the Crimson Tide from 1979 to 1983, graduating with a degree in business administration from the University of Alabama.

As a wide receiver, he caught 71 receptions for 1,386 yards and 15 touchdowns. He ranked third among Alabama's career touchdown receivers and seventh in career receiving yards.

He was named All-SEC as a senior and chosen to participate in the Senior Bowl in his hometown.

A standout at Mobile's Murphy High School, Jones earned first team All-State honors his senior season with the Panthers as a star wide receiver. Jones played in the Alabama All-Star Game in Tuscaloosa following his senior season.

He played collegiately at the University of Alabama for Bear Bryant. The Crimson Tide receiver was picked up by the USFLs Birmingham Stallions in the 1984 draft. Jones also played for the NFLs Atlanta Falcons.


In 1989, Jones took his first coaching job as an assistant coach on the Briarwood Christian School staff in Birmingham, Alabama.

Jones was a successful high school football head coach at both Dora and Mountain Brook. He took over at Dora in 1991 for three seasons before moving over to Mountain Brook for ten years in 1996.

During his 13 season coaching career all but his first team qualified for the state playoffs. His teams also won five region championships. His playoff record stands at 22-12.

Coach Jones accepted the head coaching job at Birmingham-Southern in 2006. He was Birmingham-Southerns coach for their 2007 season, the first for the Division III school since 1939. He led the Panthers to a 1-7 inaugural season in the SCAC with primarily freshman and sophomore players.

On February 15, 2008, Jones was announced as South Alabamas first head football coach. Coach Jones first football team at South Alabama competed during the 2009 season. He remains with the program entering the 2013 season. The Jaguars now compete in the Sun Belt Conference.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Clay County shutout an amazing eleven opponents in 1996. The Panthers outscored their opponents 613-42 finishing the season 15-0.
