 Larry Ginn

Larry Ginn was an outstanding basketball and football player at Alexandria. During his sophomore basketball season in 1965-66 Ginn started at point guard as the Valley Cubs reached the Class 3A basketball championship game.

As a senior in 1967, Ginn quarterbacked Alexandria to an 8-2 season, its best win total in 15 seasons. He threw 23 touchdown passes and amassed 2,300 yards of total offense.

Ginn was selected the 1967 All-State team as a senior by the Birmingham News. He was also named to the annual Orlando Sentinel All-Southern team for his efforts.

Following high school, Ginn was a basketball starter at Montevallo as a freshman. He would transfer to Gadsden State the next year where he averaged 18 points per game as a sophomore. Ginn played his final two years at Jacksonville State where he averaged 11.8 points per game as a junior. In 1972-73, his senior season, Ginn was team captain and averaged 17.4 points as the Gamecocks finished 17-9. He was an All-Gulf South Conference selection.

After college, Ginn returned to Alexandria to coach and teach. He became varsity basketball coach for the 1978-79 season. He led his Valley Cub teams to state basketball championships in 1992, 1993 and 1997, second place finishes in 1987 and 1988 and a record eight Calhoun County tournament titles.

Ginn amassed over 600 wins in 29 seasons at Alexandria coaching basketball. Nineteen of his teams won at least 20 games.

In 1986, Coach Ginn became Alexandrias head football coach. In 21 football seasons under Ginns direction, the Valley Cubs were 195-54. Alexandria won eleven Class 4A area and region championships and State Championships in 1995 and 1997.

His football coaching record including playoffs 37-15 and his region record 77-22 are among the best of all-time in the state. His 1995 team finished 15-0 and his first state football title.

The Alexandria gymnasium was named in Ginns honor in 1995. He was named Coach of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers in 1995. Ginn is also a member of the Calhoun County Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 2005.
