 Perry Coggin 

A native of Columbia, he was born on Nov. 29, 1948. He was a graduate of USM, with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education. Coach Coggin enjoyed a very successful career as an Athletic Director and Coach in a number of schools across the country.

He is credited with an amazing 248 wins in high school football, won a number of Coach of the Year awards and was the most winning football coach at West Marion High School, Foxworth, Mississippi.

He served as the Athletic Director, Football and Baseball Coach for the Salem Attendance School prior to his death in 2012.

Other schools include Window Rock, Ariz.; South Mountain, Ariz.; Ft. Payne Ala.; Buckhorn, Ala.; and Columbia Academy. In addition, he coached the Dixie Belles World Series Softball Teams, leading them to two state championships in Mississippi.

Coach Coggin led Columbia Academy to the 1978 Mississippi state championship and his team from 1976-1978 finished a combined 34-2.

He was the head football coach at Buckhorn from 1979-1980 where his teams finished with a 12-8 record. In 1981, he moved over to Fort Payne high school where his two teams went 9-22.

In 1984 Coggin moved back to his home state and took over the football program at West Marion High where he became the winningest coach at the school over the next couple of decades.

Coach Perry Coggin, 63, of Jayess, MS, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 31 at his residence.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1970 Monroe Academy won the first championship in the A.I.S.A. by defeating Lowndes Academy 6-0.
