Ronnie Sikes attended Randolph County High School, Southern Union State Junior College and Auburn University. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Education from Auburn.

Following graduation, he served as an assistant coach at Valley High School (1981-83), Notasulga (1984-87), Beulah (1990-92) and Mortimer Jordan High in 1988 before accepting the head coaching position at Mortimer Jordan in the fall of 1989 for one season. His only team went 7-4.
